Biographical history
John Smith Shanks, 1874-1946, was born in Dumbartonshire, Scotland and came to Fernie, British Columbia in 1908 as a miner. In 1910 he became manager of Coal Creek Mines with the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company. Between 1914 and 1945 he lived in Nordegg, Alberta and was the general manager of Brazeau Collieries Ltd. He retired to Calgary in 1945. He and his wife, Catherine, had two children, Margaret (Armour) and David S.
