Biographical history
John Nilson, 1903-1988, was born in Norway and emigrated to Calgary, Alberta by 1935. He worked as a carpenter. He enlisted in the Canadian Army during the Second World War. He was unmarried. He died and was buried in Calgary.

The fonds was acquired by the law office of Claire McMordie, who acted as executor of Nilson’s estate. She transferred it to Tove Engebretsen in 2007, who in turn donated it to Glenbow.

The fonds consists of two postcards written to John Nilson from his sister in Norway (with translation); his Soldier’s Service Paybook; a portrait assumed to be of him; inventory of his personal effects at the time of his death; and a letter from Claire McMordie explaining the provenance.
