Biographical history
John Joseph Makes Him Long (sometimes Makes It Long), 1870-1960, a Sioux from South Dakota, USA, was a scout during the Indian wars of 1890-1891 and was a veteran of Wounded Knee. From 1891 to 1915 he served in the USA Indian Police on the Cheyenne River Reservation, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. He went on government pension in 1928. He lived in Bridger, South Dakota, and was an active member of the Upper Cheyenne Congregational Church, for which he was a layman for 10 years and a deacon for 26. His wife's name was Mary.

The fonds consists of notebook, predominantly in Sioux (ca. 1899-1942), speech on 50th anniversary of Cheyenne River Indian Agency (1941), miscellaneous correspondence (1909-1950), various personal and agency papers (1877-1948), and photographs of John and other Sioux (ca. 1870s-1959).
