John Galt was a graduate of Glasgow and London Universities. He immigrated to the United States in 1879. He lived in Toronto and started his practice there in 1885. In 1902 Galt was hired as consultant to the city of Regina, Saskatchewan. By 1905, Galt’s practice had several projects in the prairies developing water and electrical in municipalities close to the CPR railroad. John Galt Engineering expanded with partners Owen Smith, Edmund Miles, and John Haddin. In 1916, Galt retired and the firm was renamed Haddin & Miles, with its head office in Calgary, Alberta. Following the retirement of Haddin in 1965, the firm merged with Reid Crowther & Partners.
