Biographical history

John Emerson, 1859-1932, was born in Wellingore, Lincolnshire, England and came to Calgary, Alberta in 1885. With his brother he farmed west of the city before establishing a grocery firm on 8th Avenue. He was an alderman in 1901-1902 and 1903-1905 and then mayor from 1905-1907. He returned to England in 1912 where he lived at Burgess Hill, Sussex. Emerson and his wife, Ellen Fowers, ?-1939, had two daughters, Doris (Fricker), 1900-1974, and Nellie (Nye), 1897-?.
