Biographical history
John Douglas "Jack" Balfour, 1913-1996, was born in Vancouver and moved at a young age to Turner Valley, Alberta, where his family was involved in the oil industry. Jack Balfour served in the First Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment in the Second World War. After the war he worked for Trans Canada Airlines and Home Oil. Balfour volunteered with the Calgary Booster Club, Stampeder Quarterback Club, Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation, Heritage Park Society, and the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.

The fonds consists of photographs with the Armoured Carrier Regiment. The 1st Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment (1CACR) (also known as the 1st Canadian Armoured Personnel Carrier Regiment) was an armoured regiment of the Canadian Army formed during the late stages of World War II in the European theatre; also includes photo of oil derricks in Turner Valley, ca. 1936-1937.
