Biographical history
John Carleton Ayer, 1925-2011, was born in Banff and educated in Calgary, Alberta. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1944. In 1947 he moved to Edmonton, where he established a confectionery and wholesale business, and worked in automobile sales. In 1955 he returned to Calgary and worked for a tire retailer. He was elected to Calgary City Council in 1966 and served until 1977. In 1970 he was appointed chairman of the Fort Calgary Ad Hoc Committee, which in 1973 was renamed the Fort Calgary Steering Committee. In 1976 it was reconstituted as the Fort Calgary Preservation Society. Mr. Ayer later worked in commercial real estate sales and in 1982 became the manager of the Lacombe Centre.
