Fonds F2603 - John Archibald Turner fonds

John Archibald Turner, 1867-1935, was born near Edinburgh, Scotland and came to Canada in the 1880s. In 1895 he married Wilhelmina Dawson. In 1886 Turner and his cousins, Peter Turner Bone and Bryce Wright, came to Calgary, Alberta and established the Ailsa Ranch. He later became associated with his cousins, Robert and James Turner, in raising Clydesdales and Shorthorn cattle at Turner Valley. After 1904 Turner moved his Balgreggan Stock farm near Calgary, to a location later known as Turner Siding. Turner sold his herd in 1913 and he ran unsuccessfully as a Liberal candidate in the Okotoks riding. Following this he moved to Victoria, British Columbia where he developed the Uplands subdivision, while still operating his Alberta ranch. He and his wife had four children, Nelly (Gray), Janetta Archibald "Jennie", 1898-?, Russell Hatton, 1896-1958?, and Dawson, 1903-1934. Dawson operated Balgreggan from 1926 to 1929 before moving to Port Alberni, British Columbia.
