Biographical history
John Allen Turner was born in Central Butte, Saskatchewan on December 7, 1927. As a result of the onset of the Korean War, he volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Navy on October 10, 1950. He served as a member of Naval Aviation as an Aviation Technician. He was assigned to a number of ships including the Shearwater, Bonaventure, Cornwallis, Stadacona, Quebec, Naden, and Magnificent. The greater part of his service was spent on the Shearwater. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Navy contingent that marched in the parade at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1950 and received a medal marking his attendance at that event. In 1958, while on leave in Halifax, he met and married Emma Bartel, a marriage that lasted 57 years. During his career in the Navy, John rose to the rank of CP02. John retired from the Navy in 1975 and he and his wife moved to Calgary where they remained until his death on November 22, 2017 at age 89.
