Biographical history

James M. Lindsey, 1908-1974, was born in Stettler, Alberta and resided in the Hand Hills near Craigmyle before coming to Calgary about 1925. From about 1928 to 1931 he was a tuberculosis patient at the Central Alberta Sanatorium where he began taking pictures. From about 1933 to 1939 he operated the Art Film Service, specializing in portraits taken in the home, or group portraits of military units. He then studied accounting. After being rejected for military service in the Second World War, he was employed by the Canada Malting Company Limited, retiring after 30 years in 1973. He died in 1974 at the age of 67 years. James M. Lindsey was survived by his wife Helen and their daughter Patricia (Mrs. William Johnston).

The fonds consists of photographs taken by Lindsey while he was a patient at the Central Alberta Sanatorium; views of Calgary Stampede parades; Bowness park; views of royal visits in 1939 and 1958; and building and hotel, Banff, Alberta.
