Biographical history
James Alexander Lougheed, 1854-1925, was born in Brampton, Ontario, was educated at the University of Toronto and called to the Bar in 1877. He moved to Calgary in 1883 and established a law practice. In 1889 he was appointed to the Senate and became Conservative Leader in the Senate in 1906. He was minister without portfolio in the Borden government after 1911 and during First World War was chairman of the Military Hospitals Commission. In 1918 he became minister of the Department of Soldiers Civil Re-establishment. He married Isabella Clark Hardisty, 1864-1936, and they had six children, Clarence Hardisty, 1885-1933, Norman Alexander, 1889-1963, Edgar D., 1894-1951, Dorothy Isabel (Hutchison), 1898-1958, Marjorie Yolande, 1905-1917, and Douglas, 1901-1931. James Lougheed School in Calgary was named in his honour in 1957.

The fonds consists of Lougheed family photographs, particularly of Norman's family; film of James' funeral (1925); correspondence regarding theatre companies in Calgary in which James had an interest (1905); letter appointing James to the Senate; legal and financial papers of William L.
