Fonds F1640 - James H. and Fred Schofield fonds

James H. Schofield, 1858-1939, was born in Durham, Ontario and raised in Brockville. He joined the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in 1878 and was stationed at Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan and at Fort Macleod and Fort Calgary, Alberta. He was discharged in 1881. He ran a general store in Pincher Creek, Alberta, in partnership with Harry E. Hyde, from 1883 until 1887 when it was sold to the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). In 1888 he married Edyth McClement, ?-1953, a school teacher originally from Ontario. They had two children, Frederick H. and Edna. The family ran the Marna Ranch south of Pincher Creek, 1888-1894. They moved back into Pincher Creek and James opened another general store, Schofield and Company. The store was sold in 1911, and in 1928 James and Edyth retired to Victoria, British Columbia. In 1913 their son, Fred H., 1890-[after 1975], married Margaret "Peggy" Margach, 1892-[after 1975]. Fred was a traveller for L.T. Mewburn and Company, a wholesale grocery business in Calgary in the 1910s. He was agent for southeastern Alberta. Fred and Peggy subsequently moved to Vancouver, British Columbia.
