Biographical history
James Douglas Laidlaw, 1910-2005, was born in Ailsa Craig, Ontario and moved with his family to Strathmore, Alberta in 1912. His father opened general stores in that town as well as Okotoks, High River, Nanton, Cardston and Calgary. James worked with his brother in Cardston, then operated an insurance agency in Nanton, Alberta from 1938 to 1980. He also served as Coroner, Magistrate, Justice of the Peace and Judge, and sold Tip Top Tailer made-to-measure suits. Laidlaw was very interested in local history and for twenty-five years wrote a column on district heritage for the Nanton newspaper, using information from interviews with pioneers. He married Edna Hinman in 1941.
