Biographical history

James Abel Hornby, 1861-1944, was born in Springfield, Ontario and came to Calgary, Alberta in 1892 to work as a construction foreman. He later entered business for himself and was responsible for the construction of many city projects including Calgary's first steel bridge over the Elbow River. In 1908 he became an insurance agent with E.A. Lilly Adjustment Agency. He served for 15 years as a city alderman and was affiliated throughout his life with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. In 1896 he married Annie Isabel MacRae, ?-1927, and they had ten children, John William, 1900-1901, Joy, Marian Eva (Campbell), 1903-?, Alice (Sipes), Isabel (Lovatt), Rosamond (Tebo), 1908-2001, Laura (Paterson), Esther (Kwiat), 1912-2001, James Malcolm, 1898-?, and Robert.

The fonds consists of Hornby's correspondence, campaign literature, appointments, and building contracts and accounts; photographs of family, friends and Calgary; and various family correspondence, certificates, school records (Crescent Heights High School, Western Canada College, Garbutt Business College), poetry, invitations, programs and souvenir booklets.
