Biographical history

Jack Morton, 1879-1944, was born in the Balmoral district of Manitoba, and came to southern Alberta in 1891. He settled in the Rosebud area in 1901 with Jose Sala and married Jose's daughter, Carmen. He named his ranch the CX and later expanded his holdings to include the Bragg Ranch and Pacific Cold Storage Ranch near Standard, the Two Bar Ranch near Wayne and the XC ranch near Cochrane. The Morton family farmed and raised horses which they sold to neighbours and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Jack and Carmen had five children, Lucy (Cunningham), Charlotte (Donnelly), Clare (Barton), Allan and Frances (Leahy).
