Biographical history

John J. "Jack" Bowen, 1902-1986, was born in Franklin, Manitoba. His family relocated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1910 where he attended school. Bowen headed north in 1919 and lived and worked in Fort McMurray, Great Slave Lake, Aklavik and Herschel Island. He became interested in aviation in the late 1920s and worked as a navigator and flight engineer. In the 1920s and 1930s he flew with Wop May, including the efforts to locate the Mad Trapper. During the Second World War he was superintendent of Aircraft Repair Ltd in Edmonton. He then opened a car dealership in Devon, Alberta where he was mayor. He and his wife Doris Boon married in 1940 and had four children, Donald, J. Douglas, David and Elizabeth (Mercure).

The fonds consists of a diary of his work in the north (1933-1934); newsclippings regarding Bowen, Wop May and various northern events (1927-1984); and photographs of bush flying and military group (ca. 1930-1935).
