Biographical history

John Edward Annan Macleod, 1878-1966, was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He received his law degree from Dalhousie University in 1903 and was admitted to the Bar the following year. He moved to Alberta in 1907 and practiced law in Didsbury for two years before joining Lougheed and Bennett in Calgary. He was president of the Law Society of Alberta, 1936-1937, and also vice-president of the Canadian Bar Association. He eventually became senior partner of Macleod, McDermid, Dixon, Burns, Love and Leitch.

He and his wife, Ethel Flemming Macleod, ?-1936, who was also from Nova Scotia, had four children, Flora, Phoebe (Stenson), Margaret (Walker) and Paul. He was president of the Ranchmen's Club in Calgary from 1927-1929. Macleod was also an amateur historian, and was recognized as a leading authority on the fur trade and North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in western Canada. He contributed articles to a variety of historical periodicals.

Archival history

The legal records in this fonds were salvaged from the Hollinsworth Building, owned by Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, before the Bankers Hall renovations were begun. Macleod probably had offices in the building.

The fonds consists of legal files (1917-1958) relating to the Law Society of Alberta, Canadian Bar Association, International Mineral Separator Co., Alberta Gas Trunk Line Co., Canada. Department of Mines and Resources (Alberta geological surveys), Toole Peet Ltd., Strand Oil Co., High River Wheat and Cattle Co., and Bert C. Berry. Also consists of Macleod's articles, notes and correspondence about the fur trade, western personalities and the NWMP, including reference material and photographs he gathered while researching his articles. Includes family photographs.
