Biographical history

The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire was founded in Canada in 1900 by Mrs. Clark Murray. The objects of the IODE are to help in the education of Canadian youth, promote unity in the Empire and foster patriotism and good citizenship. Its motto is "One flag, one throne, one Empire." The organization officially changed its name to IODE in the 1970s. Under the constitution, a municipal chapter is formed in each municipality in which there are three or more primary chapters. The Municipal Chapter of Calgary was formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1918. Charter members included Mary V. Spence, Edith Robie and Elizabeth Turner Bone. The Municipal Chapter coordinates the joint activities of the various Calgary chapters, forwards all communications and contributions to the Provincial Chapter, and acts as host when National and Provincial Chapters hold their annual meetings in Calgary.

Many primary chapters of the IODE were established in Calgary, including A.E. Cross Chapter (1966), Bow Fort Chapter (1958), Chinook Chapter (1946), Colonel James Macleod Chapter (1997), Colonel Macleod Chapter (1909), Colonel Russell Boyle Chapter (1920), Dr. Geraldine Oakley Chapter (1951), Fort Calgary Chapter (1956), George W. Kerby Chapter (1942), Glenmore Chapter (1965), Juno Beach Chapter (2010), Lady Lougheed Chapter (2007), Military Chapter (1914), Royal Scots Chapter (1917), Sarcee Chapter (1968), and Shagenappi Chapter (1956). The Crowsnest Chapter in southern Alberta was established in 1922.
