Biographical history

(William) Ian Hamilton is a Canadian mystery writer. A former journalist and civil servant, his work has appeared in Maclean's, Boston, the Leader-Post, the Calgary Albertan, and the Calgary Herald. Hamilton is the author of the Ava Lee crime/mystery series. His first book, The Children's Crusade, was non-fiction and was the Canadian Book of the Month Club Main Selection. The Water Rat of Wanchai won the Arthur Ellis for best first crime novel.; it was a Quill and Quire top five novel of the year; an Amazon editor's pick and an Amazon top 100 book of the year; and a Toronto Star top five novel of the year. It was also short listed for the CBC Bookie Award. The Disciple of Las Vegas was short listed for the Barry Award as the best original paperback published in the United States in 2014. The Wild Beasts of Wuhan was short listed for the Lambda Award as the best lesbian crime/mystery novel of 2013. See here for more information

Scope and content

Consists of Hamilton's records of his writing activities related to the first 13 of his Ava Lee novels and two Uncle Chow Tung novels, published between 2010 and 2019. The materials include one or two typescripts drafts for each book, line edits in hand (except for Couturier of Milan and Dragon Head King of Hong Kong), editors comments (except for Couturier of Milan and Dragon Head King of Hong Kong), page proofs as well as one research notebook, published reviews and interviews and some original book cover designs for Ava Lee novels. The novels are: Water Rat of Wanchai (#1), Disciple of Las Vegas (#2), Wild Beasts of Wuhan (#3), Red Pole of Macau (#4), Scottish Banker of Surabaya (#5), Two Sisters of Borneo (#6), King of Shanghai (#7), Princeling of Nanjing (#8), Couturier of Milan (#9), Imam of Tawi Tawi (#10), Goddess of Yantai (#11), Mountain Mask of Sha Tin (#12), Dragon Head King of Hong Kong (prequel #0.5/#13), Uncle Chow Tung novel (#1) -Fate, Uncle Chow Tung novel (#2) -Foresight.
