Biographical history
Oswald John Hurst, 1883-1972, was born in Leicestershire, England and trained in the building construction trades. He moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1906 and began his own contracting business in 1908. One of his first major contracts was the construction of a cold storage plant for P. Burns in 1913. He joined with George E. Hughes in 1926 to form the general contracting firm of Hughes and Hurst. Its major project was the building of the Birks Building in 1929.
The company was renamed Hurst Construction Company in 1938 and was registered under the Companies Act on November 28, 1950. In 1959 Ronald Sinnot Graham, 1917-2005, who had worked for the company since 1950, bought the firm from Hurst in partnership with Ken Vine. The company has constructed and renovated many Calgary schools, apartments, banks, stores and other buildings. The value of its contracts in 1984 was approximately $2,500,000.
