        History

        Walter Huckvale, 1861-1937, was born in Oxfordshire, England. He came to North America in 1882 and arrived in Calgary, Alberta in 1883. In 1884 he bought a ranch near Kipp, and was one of the first ranchers to raise purebred Herefords. In 1893 he moved to Manyberries where he started a ranch in partnership with Sid Hooper. In 1898 he married Frances Jane Evans, 1875-?, originally from Ontario, and they had four children, Eleanor, Walter Evans, Sidney and Cuthbert. Walter served as president of the Western Stock Growers' Association, 1907-1916, and was very active in the Western Canada Irrigation Association. He sold the ranch in 1916 and moved into Medicine Hat, where he was active in municipal politics.
