Biographical history

Howard Burton Macdonald, 1885-1960, was born in Greenhill, Nova Scotia and came to Calgary, Alberta in 1910 on a harvest excursion. Trained in business, he worked in accounting and insurance, founding the United Assurance Company in 1916. It later became the H. B. Macdonald Company Ltd. He was a member of the Alberta Legislature from 1944 to 1955, first as an independent, then as a member of the Social Credit caucus. Macdonald was a president of the Calgary Board of Trade (later Chamber of Commerce), and a member of the boards of the Community Chest (later United Way), Mount Royal College, Woods Homes, Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), Alberta Safety Council and the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. He was also active with Royal Trust Company, Canadian and Alberta Red Cross, Kiwanis Club and the Masons. He and his wife had one daughter, Eleanor (Johnson).
