Between 1949 and 1951 Gray served at the Currie Barracks in Calgary, at Camp Borden on a 3 inch mortar course with the Royal Canadian School of Infantry, Wainwright militia summer camp, joined the Special Forces for the Korean War and traveled from Fort Lewis, Washington to Kure and Sasebo Japan before embarking for Korea.
