Biographical history

Herbert Edward Turtle, 1867-1939, was born in England. He married Rosa B. Falkner in 1898 and they had four children. He moved to Canada in 1904 to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), and his family joined him in Ontario the following year. The family moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1910. Turtle worked as chief accountant for the CPR Freight Department, 1910-1913, and in the Electric Light and Power Department of the City of Calgary, 1915-1919.

He was very involved in the petroleum industry, and invested in the Scottish Canadian Oil Syndicate, Dreadnaught Oil Company, Sterling Oil and Refining Company, Alberta Pacific Oil Company, Western Pacific Oil Company and many other companies. A Liberal, he held strong political views and published commentaries in newspaper columns and pamphlets. In 1919, he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia and opened his own business as a chartered accountant.

The fonds consists of correspondence, prospectuses, newsclippings and agreements pertaining to petroleum companies; and correspondence (some with William Lyon Mackenzie King and Angus McInnis), writings (including articles for the CCF weekly, The Commonwealth), and newsclippings pertaining to his political views.
