Biographical history
Henry James "Harry" Howell, 1889-1972, was born in Liverpool, England. He came to Calgary, Alberta in 1910 and opened a company called Art Signs. He served in the 4th Canadian Field Ambulance, 2nd Canadian Division during First World War as a quartermaster sergeant. He enlisted at Calgary in November 1914, and served in France until his demobilization in 1919. He was employed by Art Sign Co. from 1920-1925. From 1926 to 1941 he operated Howell Signs at 400, 325-8th Avenue SW, and then went on active service during the Second World War. From 1948 to 1950 he worked as a sign painter at Art Craft Sign Studios. From 1951 until his retirement in 1961 he worked as a commercial artist, briefly operating Howell and Wilson Display Co. in 1953. He and his wife Catherine had two sons, Cecil Charles and Douglas Pemberton.
