Fonds F1210 - Hector J. MacLeod fonds

Hector John MacLeod, 1887-1978, was born in Prince Edward Island. He moved to High River, Alberta with his family in 1905. He received his teacher's certificate from the Alberta Normal School (Calgary Normal School) shortly after. In 1910 he moved to Montreal to attend McGill University. He received his BSc in electrical engineering in 1914 and in the same year was appointed lecturer in electrical engineering at the University of Alberta. He fought overseas during the First World War. In 1920 he married Helen Bishop Montgomery, and they had three children, Margaret, 1923- , and the twins born in 1925, Donald and Dorothy. He received his PhD from Harvard in 1921, and was a professor of electical engineering at the University of Alberta, 1921-1936. From 1936 to 1953 he was a professor in, and head of, the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. He headed the British Columbia Power Commission from 1954 to 1959. In 1974 he was awarded the A.G.L. McNaughton Award for his work in electrical engineering education.
