Biographical history
The Health Knowledge Network (HKN) is a cost-recovery health information consortium operated by the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. Established in 1994 through start-up funding from the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR), the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the faculties of medicine of both universities, HKN licenses health information products on behalf of health care practitioners, researchers, policy makers, and post-secondary institutions. In addition to its consortium work, HKN has worked on several initiatives advocating for provincial and national licensing.
The HKN office was based out of the University of Alberta from 1994 to 2001. Since 2001, it has been located at the University of Calgary when the General Manager position moved to Calgary.
From 1994 to 1998, HKN was governed by a Management Group composed of the University Librarians of the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, and of the librarians involved in the submitting the AHFMR proposal. Starting in 1999, the governance structure of HKN changed. An Executive Committee was convened and composed of the Heads of the Health Sciences Libraries at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, and the General Manager. Executive Committee reports to the Partners, the University Librarians of both Universities.
