Name of creator
Hay and Harding Ltd. was founded in Calgary, Alberta in 1918, when James A. Hay, ?-1927, and Hugh C. Harding, ?-1930, bought out Whitmore and Gourlay, blacksmiths. The business, located at 1439-10th Avenue SE, consisted of a blacksmith shop with painting and woodworking departments. In 1930 John Charles Scott, an employee for several years, bought it. The company shod horses, built wagons for bakeries, dairies, and grain hauling, and in the 1930s built bus bodies for Greyhound, Sorenson, Cardinal and other bus lines. In about 1940 it moved to new premises at 108-2nd Avenue SW. Business gradually declined after 1945, and J.C. Scott's health deteriorated. When he retired in 1965 the business closed. John and Gertrude Scott had two children, Gertrude Victoria "Tory" (Hallett), 1919-1998 and Claire (MacKay).
