History
Mildred Itasca Hall, 1899-1974, was born in the United States and moved to Calgary as a young woman. She attended the University of Alberta from about 1919 to 1921, earning a Bachelor's degree. She taught in Olds and Fitzgerald, Alberta before moving to Yellowknife in 1939. She was the first trained teacher to be hired by the local school board. In 1941 Miss Hall married the editor and publisher of the "Yellowknife Blade" newspaper, John Murray 'Jock' McMeekan, 1903-1963, and they had one daughter, Helene, 1944- . In the late 1950s they left Yellowknife to live in Alberta, and Mrs. McMeekan continued to teach there until she retired to Victoria British Columbia in 1968. In 1966, a nine room primary school was constructed: Yellowknife Public School was renamed in Miss Hall's honour in 1974.
