History
The British American Oil Company Limited was incorporated in Canada in 1906. In its early years it was primarily a refiner and marketer of petroleum products. Following the discovery of oil at Leduc, Alberta in 1947, the company quickly became an explorer and producer of petroleum products in Western Canada with the acquisition of Canadian Gulf Oil Company. In 1969 Gulf Oil Corporation of the United States purchased B.A. and merged it with the Royalite Oil Company and Shawinigan Chemicals Limited. The merged company was called Gulf Oil Canada Limited, shortened in 1978 to Gulf Canada Limited. In 1984 Olympia & York purchased the American-owned shares in the firm and sold the refining and marketing assets. In 1987 the company became Gulf Canada Resources Limited and in the 1990s expanded its operations around the world. In 2001 ConocoPhillips, a United States firm that had previously been active in Canada through its interests in Hudson's Bay Oil and Gas and Dome Petroleum, purchased the company. In 2012 the company was separated into two new firms, Phillips 66 and ConcoPhillips to focus on refining and marketing on the one hand, and on exploration and production on the other.
