        Hiromi Goto was born December 31, 1966 in Chiba-ken, Japan, immigrating to Canada in 1969. The Goto family lived on the west coast of British Columbia before moving to Nanton, Alberta in 1977. Goto graduated from the University of Calgary in 1989 with a B.A. in English.

        Goto’s first novel, Chorus of Mushrooms was published in 1994 and won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 1995 for the Best First Book Canada and Caribbean Region. The book was also awarded the James Tiptree, Jr. Award, the Sunburst Award and the Spectrum Award. Goto has written several other novels including The Kappa Child, Hopeful Monsters, and writes for young adult and children’s audiences (Half World (2009), Darkest Light (2012) and The Water of Possibility (2002).
