Biographical history

Gerard Joseph Amerongen, 1914- , was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was educated at Regina, Saskatoon, and Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and Edmonton, Alberta. He was President of the Students’ Union of the University of Alberta in 1943-1944 and was called to the Bar in 1946. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) for Edmonton-Meadowlark from 1971 to 1986 and was Speaker of the Alberta Legislature from 1972 to 1986. He married Elizabeth Helen Fetherstonhaugh in 1943, and they had eight children.
