Biographical history

George Mercer Dawson, 1849-1901, was born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, and educated at McGill University and the Royal School of Mines, London, as a geologist. He was a member of the International Boundary Commission which surveyed the 49th Parallel from Lake of the Woods to the Rockies, 1873-1875. In 1875 he joined the Geological Survey of Canada, and served as director from 1895 until his death. One of his important surveys was the 1887 survey of the Alaska boundary at the Yukon River.
