Biographical history

George Hoadley, 1866-1955, was born in Wetheral, Cumberland, England and came to Canada in 1890. Hoadley settled near Okotoks, Alberta, and first ran as a political candidate as an independent farmer in the High River riding in 1902. He was elected to the provincial legislature in 1909 as a Conservative and sat as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) until 1935. He switched parties to the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) in 1921 and served as Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Health and Minister of Railways and Telephones in subsequent UFA governments. After leaving the legislature he worked for the National Committee on Mental Hygiene and the World Health Organization. The town of Hoadley, Alberta was named after him. Hoadley and his wife, Lily M. Rowles, 1882-1964, were married in 1900 and had 3 children, George Martindale, 1901- , William Cecil, 1904-1956, Doris Muriel (Cassidy), 1903- . He retired to Victoria, British Columbia after separating from his wife.

The fonds consists of a photograph album of Hoadley family activities in England and Okotoks; photos of Hoadley, United Farmers of Alberta, Edmonton Grads, visit of Prince of Wales and Mount Robson.
