Biographical history

George Clift King, 1848-1935, was born in Chelmsford, England and emigrated to Canada in 1874, joining the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) that year. He was on the march west and was discharged in 1877. King worked for I.G. Baker in Calgary, Alberta for five years, and then opened his own store. He was appointed postmaster in 1885. He was mayor of Calgary, 1886-1887, and alderman in 1889 and 1891-1892. King received the Order of the British Empire in 1934. He married Louise Monroe, 1859-1951, and they had four children, George, 1886-?, Edward, 1889-1970, Louise (Walker), 1899-?, and Gertrude (Macdonald), 1892-1983.
