Biographical history
Gabriel Cote, ?-1884, (also known as Mimiy, Mee-may or Pigeon) was probably born near Swan Lake, Manitoba. He was a well known hunter who by 1850 had gathered a small band of English-speaking Metis and Saulteaux near Swan River. He was recognized by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) as the principal chief in the Swan River area, and was a signatory to Treaty 4. He chose a reserve 32 km below Fort Pelly and farmed there the remainder of his life.
For further information see John L. Tobias' article, "Mimiy" in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. XI. - Toronto : University of Toronto Press, 1982, p. 595-596.
