Biographical history

James Frederick Scott, 1892-1982, was born in Meaford, Ontario. He ranched near Oyen, Alberta, 1911-1914. During the First World War he fought overseas with the 10th Battalion and the Royal Flying Corps. On his return he studied law at Osgoode Hall and the University of Alberta. In 1920 he married Olga Larson, 1893-1981, and they had four children: Sydney Edith (Turner), Sheila (Davis), Frederick Larson, and James Bernard, ?-1954.

He ran the Baha Tinda Ranch near Red Deer Lake south of Calgary and also practiced law in Calgary until Second World War when he took command of the Calgary Highlanders. In 1942 he organized and commanded the first Battle Drill Training School in Vernon, British Columbia. In 1945 he returned to Calgary to practice law with J.V.H. Milvain and to continue ranching. J. Fred Scott School in Calgary was named in his honour.

The fonds consists of personal account and photographs of wild horse round-up (1917); Battle Drill Training Centre scrapbook and pipe music (1942-1946); autobiographical manuscript regarding military career and ranching (1974); biographical information (1923-1979), and photographs of the family, ranch and military views. Also includes memorabilia and photographs from the career of Colonel Scott's grandson Peter C. Scott, a bus driver in Calgary.
