Biographical history
Fred Robert Gordon McCall, 1896-1949, was born in Vernon, British Columbia and came to Calgary about 1905. During the First World War he served with the Royal Flying Corps, and shot down 37 enemy planes. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, the Military Cross and Bar, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1919 he married Genevieve Strong, and they had two children, Geraldine and Fred, 1928-2013. After the war he performed flying stunts at local fairs, worked in Drumheller coal mines, and held a variety of other jobs. He was the first president of the Calgary Aero Club. In 1928 he started his own company, Great Western Airways, which flew freight and passengers to the Alberta oilfields. In 1956 McCall Field in Calgary was named in his honour and in 1978 he was invested in the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame.
