Biographical history

Frederic Ernest Andrews, 1885-1961, was born at Portsmouth Barracks, England, the son of a soldier. In 1908 he married Margaret Emily Higginson, ?-1969, and emigrated to Canada around 1912. He studied veterinary medicine in London, Ontario and was awarded a diploma in 1912. Margaret Andrews did not join her husband until 1920 as she was caring for her sick father. Fred went to work at the Bar U Ranch, Pekisko, Alberta as horse manager some time during the First World War. He served with the 1st Depot Battalion, Alberta Regiment at Sarcee Barracks in 1918. The Andrews family remained at the Bar U until 1927 when they went to work briefly for the Davenport family in Acme, Alberta. The family moved to Calgary in 1929 where Fred continued to do veterinary work for his neighbours as well as working as a weed inspector. During the Second World War he worked as a caretaker at the Mewata Armouries. Fred and Margaret had five children, Cecil, 1910-1971, Joan, 1915-1936, Ernest, 1921-1960, Florence (Patterson), 1922-2007, and Robert, 1924-1989.
