Biographical history
Franklin Alexander Coates, 1879-1961, came to Alberta in the early 1900s from Bewdley, Ontario, where he had been a barber. He farmed near Langdon, Alberta. He served in the South African War as a member of the South African Constabulary.

The fonds consists of an autobiographical manuscript, including his service in the South African Constabulary (1958); and photographs (1900-1904) of his barber shop, the South African War, and farming near Langdon. Includes an edited transcript of his autobiography compiled by his grandson, Wayne Coates.
