Biographical history

Frank C. Bernard, 1886-?, was born in La Caleta, Spain and in 1896 moved to England to attend school. He was educated at Stonyhurst and Mount St. Mary's College. From 1902 to 1915 he lived in Canada and worked as a farmhand, cowboy, lumberjack, surveyor, explorer, cook, hotel manager and labourer. Among the ranches he worked on was the St. Anne's ranch at Trochu, Alberta. In 1915, during the First World War, he joined the 12th Canadian Mounted Rifles and was later commissioned in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. He served in France and was wounded. From 1917 to 1918 he served in Palestine and then returned to France. After the war he lived in Ireland and worked for the ministry of labour, ministry of finance and the Royal Irish Constabulary. He moved back to England in 1926.
