Biographical history
Father R. Andrew MacDonell, OSB, founder of the Scottish Immigrant Aid Society, was involved in several schemes to bring Scottish immigrants to western Canada. In 1923 and 1924, with cooperation from the Soldier Settlement Board, he was involved in bringing settlers to areas of Alberta near Red Deer, Ohaton, and Westlock. In 1926 the Clandonald and St. Brides colonies, settled by Hebrideans, were established near Lloydminster. As part of the scheme, each family was supplied with a cottage, barn, and basic agricultural equipment. Father MacDonell was later director of the Catholic Society of Canada, based in Montreal.
