Biographical history
The Famous 5 Foundation (originally Famous Five Foundation) was established in Calgary, Alberta in 1996 and incorporated in 1997. Among the founders were Frances Wright and Nancy Millar. The purpose of the society is to celebrate the accomplishments of the Famous 5 women: Louise McKinney, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, and Emily Murphy; to commemorate the Persons' Case of 1929, when Canadian women were recognized as "person" and therefore won the right to sit in the Senate; to support women's leadership development; and to inspire, recognize and celebrate women's achievement. The Foundaton commissioned and installed bronze monuments of the Famous 5 women in Calgary's Olympic Plaza (1999) and on Parliament Hill in Ottawa (2000). It has also hosted speakers series; developed the Famous 5 curriculum for schools; and successfully lobbied Ottawa to put the Famous 5 on the 50 dollar bill and a postage stamp. For further information see New Woman, New Nation : Emily Murphy, the Famous 5 Foundation and the Production of a Female Citizen / Tracy Kulba. -- PhD thesis, University of Alberta, 2004.
