Biographical history
Ernest Smyth Ball, 1880-1917, of Merritton, Ontario was a clerk and stenographer by trade. He received military training at the Royal School of Artillery at Kingston, Ontario in early 1901, and subsequently served with the South African Constabulary during the South African War. During First World War he served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and was killed in 1917.

The fonds consists of certificate of military instruction (1901); two letters of reference about his character and service in the South African Constabulary (1903); General Leave Certificate (1903); discharge certificate from the SAC (1904); newsclipping about his return to Ontario (1904); and his photograph while in uniform (ca. 1901-1903).
