      History

      William Epstein, 1913-2001, was born and raised in Alberta. He served at the Canadian Military Headquarters in London during the Second World War, and immediately after was offered job with the United Nations (UN). He was based in New York from 1946 on, and became a leading advocate of global nuclear disarmament. He worked for the Political and Security Council Affairs Department, and headed the UN Disarmanent Division. After his retirement from the UN in 1973 he was a visiting professor at four Canadian universities, chaired the Canadian Pugwash group of scientists, and continued his peace work. He received the Order of Canada.
