Biographical history

Earl Adam Hastings, 1924-1996, was born and educated in Regina. He served in the RCAF, 1942-1945. From 1948 to 1952 he was leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party. He married Evelyn Kain in 1952 and they had three children, David, Donald and Leslie. He worked for the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture, 1952-1957, then moved to Calgary where he worked as a petroleum landman for the Sun Oil Company until he was appointed to the Senate in 1966. He was president of the Calgary Liberal Association, 1958-1959, and of the Alberta Liberal Association, 1960-1962. He was appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Lester Pearson in 1966, and as a senator became widely acknowledged as the ombudsman for the federal penitentiary system, and as an expert on the punishment and rehabilitation of criminals. He was awarded the John Howard Society Distinguished Canadian Humanitarian Award in 1986.

The fonds consists of personal papers: correspondence, financial records, certificates, newsclippings and scrapbooks; senate records: general subject files, committee records, penitentiaries files and inmates' correspondence; and Liberal party records: general subject and Alberta constituency files. Includes photographs of Liberals and a copy of the film, St. Laurent : The Man and his Country.
