Biographical history
Earl Pingree Tanner, 1891-1957, was born in Afton, Wyoming, USA. He came to Magrath, Alberta with his mother and brother, and was subsequently educated at Weber Academy in Ogden, Utah and the Knight Academy in Raymond, Alberta. In 1910 he became manager of the Pioneer Lumber company in Magrath. He remained in the lumber business all his life, becoming owner of Tanner Lumber and Building Supply Company. In 1912 he married Vinessa Mary Fowler, ?-1967, of Utah, and they had six children, Vinessa (Hamilton), Earl Pingree, Jr., Lloyd B., Melba (Morley), Dorothy (Neilson) and Harold. He was mayor of Magrath for 18 years.
He was active in the Mormon church and was chairman of the Taylor Stake Genealogical Society for 16 years. In 1937 he helped establish the Golden Fleece Woollen Mills in Magrath, and was also instrumental in the establishment of a canning factory in Magrath by the Alberta Canning Company.
