Fonds F1636 - E.P. Scarlett fonds

Earle Parkhill Scarlett, 1896-1982, was born in High Bluff, Manitoba and received his education in Winnipeg. He graduated from United College (later named the University of Winnipeg) in 1916 with an arts degree and taught English for a year. He served in the First World War and then attended the University of Toronto, receiving a medical degree in 1924. From 1924 to 1927 he was a physician at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, USA and from 1927 to 1930 was an associate in medicine at the State University of Iowa.

In 1930 he moved to Calgary, Alberta as a specialist in internal medicine at the Calgary Associate Clinic where he practiced until 1960. He also produced the Calgary Associate Clinic Historical Bulletin. He served as chairman of the regional advisory board of the CBC, 1938-1940, and on the Calgary Library Board, 1934-1937. Scarlett was also involved with the Salvation Army, YMCA and Boy Scouts. He served on the board of the University of Alberta, 1946-1951, and was its Chancellor, 1952-1958. He was a popular public speaker and a regular contributor to many Canadian and American journals dealing with medicine, medical history and literary subjects. He was awarded honorary degrees by the University of Toronto, University of Alberta, and University of Calgary.

Many of his articles were published in In Sickness and in Health / Charles G. Roland, ed. -- Toronto : McClelland and Stewart, 1972. Calgary's Dr. E.P. Scarlett Senior High School was named in his honour in 1971. He married Jean Odell, ?-1975, in the 1920s and they had three children, Robert, Katharine (Aubanel), and Elizabeth (Dorotich).
