James Dick Durkie, 1920-2013, was born in Scotland. He trained as a pilot in the Second World War and eventually became a flying instructor. Durkie met his first wife in South Africa and they had two daughters Gael (Whelan) and Lexie. The family settled in Fernie, British Columbia for a time. Mrs. Durkie returned to South Africa with her daughters and James became a pilot in Calgary, Alberta, working primarily for oil industry firms such as J.C. Sproule and Associaties, Shell Oil, and other firms. He was a member of the Westwinds Club in the city. Durkie married for a second time and for a third time to Jacqueline.
