Biographical history
Duncan McDonald (or MacDonald), born ca. 1870s, was educated in Muirhead, Ayrshire, Scotland, and at the County of Ayrshire Technology Mining School, and was awarded a First Class Mining Certificate. He also received an instructor’s certificate in first aid. He worked as a mine manager in Scotland for a few years, and emigrated to Canmore, Alberta in 1908. He joined the government of Alberta in 1913, becoming a mine inspector, and later General Superintendent of Mine Rescue and First Aid for the Workmen’s Compensation Board. He supervised the recovery operations following the tragic Hillcrest mine disaster of 1914, supervised a difficult rescue of a miner at Champion, Alberta in 1917, and initiated mine rescue and first aid contests. In 1926 he left the civil service and became manager of the Elgin and Murray mines in the Drumheller area. He also served as an alderman of the City of Drumheller.
